Filter media biological filters

Laboratory Microfiltration membranes have countless laboratory uses, such as recovering biomass, measuring particulates in water, clarifying and sterilizing protein solutions, and so on. There are countless examples for both general chemistry and biology, especially for analytical proc ures. Most of these apphcations are run in dead-end flow, with the membrane replacing a more conventional medium such as filter paper. [Pg.54]

Extraction of Broth. Cultures screened for biological activity in liquid medium were tested for cycloheximide production. A 400-ml vol of the various broth cultures was partitioned with two 200-ml vol of dichloromethane. The dichloromethane extract, filtered through Whatman 50 paper, was concentrated under vacuum on a rotary evaporator and taken to dryness with Ng- Temperatures during concentration were 20-40 C. Non-inoculated broth for controls was similarly extracted. [Pg.340]

BAF [Biological aerated filter] A generic type of sewage treatment process in which the biological medium is supported on a porous matrix. See BIOBEAD, BIOCARBONE, BIO-FOR, BIOPUR, BIOSTYR, COLOX, CTX, FAST, SAFe, STEREAU. [Pg.31]
