This seems like a rather large loss for a small, 2-psi pressure drop. But after the filter basket was pulled and cleaned, and the compressor was returned to service, the accuracy of the calculation was proved. About 10 percent more moles of gas could be handled, with approximately the same amperage load, on the electric motor driver. A nice example of the Second Law of Thermodynamics in action.

The molten charge is cooled by means of the water jacket to 20-25 C. Then, while water is introduced, the mother liquor is pumped off through a filter basket until the color of the wash waters has changed from dark red to clear yellow. The first wash waters are discarded, and sufficient yellow water is retained for washing the next batch. After as much water as possible has been removed via the basket, the charge is heated to 95 C, settled /2 hr, and the oil run into a cylindrical steel steam-jacketed vacuum drier that is fitted with steam-heated runoff cocks. Fabric bag filter baskets are capable of providing removal ratings from 20 mesh to nominal 1 /am, for both Newtonian and viscous liquids. Wire mesh or fiibric baskets can be cleaned and reused in many applications, or are disposable when cleaning is not feasible. 

Woven wire lends itself easily to fabrication of pressure filter leaves and filter baskets. It is easily applied to filter dmms. It is resistant to blinding and is easily cleaned. Stretching or shrinking is non-existent. It usually costs more than non-metallic media, but usually has a long life which helps to off-set the cost along with the other factors above.

Stainless-steel filter baskets (150-mesh and 40-mesh screen Bellco Glass) or baskets constructed as described below. 

A filter basket can be prepared from a 50-ml screw-cap tube. Cut off the end of the 50-ml screw-cap tube and cut a large hole in the cap. Place a piece of 130-mesh Nitex screen between the cap and the tube, and screw in place to cover the hole.
