A further substantial development, although not on the scale of the bottle and film markets, had been the use of thermoformed PET sheet for menu trays. The high heat distortion temperature of 220°C allows these products to be used in both traditional and microwave ovens. 

Figure 2.19 displays the supremacy of the polyethylene family with roughly 70% of the film market.

In 1990, DMS introduced nylon-4,6 called Stanyl (structure 19.39), based on the reaction between adipic acid and 1,4-diaminobutane. Stanyl can withstand temperature of about 310°C allowing it to create a niche between conventional nylons and high-performance materials. It was not able to break into the film market and has only now begun to be accepted for tire cord applications. About 22 million pounds of Stanyl was produced in 2001.

Linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) polymers, with little long-chain branching, have much greater elongation than low density polyethylene (LDPE) and allow stronger products to be produced with less material. Dupont s focus on film recovery from the hospital X-ray film market was a result of the Environmental Protection Agency s Superfund liability standard, which makes site owners as well as parties involved in generating, managing, or arranging dehv-ery liable for environmental impact. 

It would be very smprising if this group of players, steadily gazing at the enormous U.S. film market, would wish to produce a thoroughly British heroic character. 

Attempts were also made to use the special film marketed by LKB (LKB Instruments, Rockville, MD.) for autoradiography of H-macromolecules. We found fluorography to be the more sensitive procedure. 

Agricultural film poses a special problem, since it may be heavily contaminated. On the other hand, its disposal can be costly, so users have motivation to find a less-expensive solution. A number of pilot projects have looked at recycling this film. Markets are often local, since it is expensive to collect from far away. 

Annual global production of LLDPE is approximately 13.6 million tons. Of that amount, approximately 77% is used in film applications (100). With that proportion, it is not surprising that much of the research and development that is conducted at resin suppliers is on the film market. LLDPE is supplanting LDPE in many film applications because of its improved strength properties, downgauging potential, and cost. 

The particular strength of polyester films, however, is the wide range of film effects that can be achieved with fillers, coatings, coextrusion, etc, as outlined in the previous sections—this versatility is imique in the films market.
