Fibrous activated carbons, activated carbon fibers, have been prepared recently and developed a new field of applications. They have a number of advantages over granular activated carbons. The principal merit to prepare activated carbon in fibrous morphology is its particular pore structure and a large physical surface area. Differences between ACFs and granular activated carbons are listed in Table 9. [Pg.77]

For the adsorption of micro-organics (p-nitrophenol, benzoic acid) in fixed-bed columns, the half breakthrough time increases proportionally with increasing bed depth but decreases inversely proportionally with increasing water flow rate [54,55]. By studying the adsorption of chloroethylenes on activated carhon fibers, Sakoda et al. [56] determined a linear relationship between the overall mass transfer coefficient (Kfu) and the flow rate Uo. The influence of temperature on file dynamic adsorption of phenol on fibrous activated carbon has also been demonstrated [57]. [Pg.392]

The influence of the pore characteristics of activated carbon on their dynamic properties has been extensively studied. Breakthrough curves obtained with p-nitrophenol and various activated carbons exhibit different shapes due to differences in pore size distribution microporoiis activated carbons induce a slow intraparticular diffusion resulting in flattened curves whereas more meso- and macroporous adsorbents possess a sharper curve because of an enhancement of mass transfer [58]. The adsorption of trihalomethanes on granular and fibrous activated carbon also shows adsorption capacities proportional to the micropore volume [59]. [Pg.392]

FIBROUS ACTIVATED CARBON is an ACTIVATED CARBON in the form of fibers, filaments, yarns or rovings and fabrics or felts. Such fibers differ from CARBON FIBERS, used for reinforcement purposes in composites, in their high surface area, high porosity and low... [Pg.1137]

Bansal and coworkers stndied the adsorption isotherms of Cn(ll), NI (II), and Cr(IV) and Cr(VI) ions on grannlated and flbrons activated carbons from aqueous solutions. The adsorption isotherms are Type I of the BET classification, showing initially a rapid adsorption tending to be asymptotic at higher concentrations. The uptake of these cations was generally smaller in case of the fibrous activated carbons (activated carbon fibers) compared with grannlated carbons, which could not be explained on the basis of snrface area alone. In order to examine... [Pg.157]

In recent years, fibrous activated carbons (activated carbon fibers) have been prepared from several precursors such as polyacrylonitrile (PAN), coal tar pitch, and petroleum pitch, that have exhibited high activity for the conversion of SO2 into H2SO4. Furthermore, the catalytic activity of these carbon fibers has been found to increase with the heat treatment temperature, the extent of increase depending upon the type of the fiber and the heat treatment temperature and atmosphere. ... [Pg.269]

Fibrous activated carbons are currently manufactured from a number of precursors including viscose rayon, polyacrylonitrile, and coal tar pitch. Rayon-based materials are particularly versatile in terms of the range of pore sizes which can be formed during activation, after suitable pre-treatment (refs. 1-3). [Pg.319]
