Balt i Q) tackled the problem of locating spin-forbidden transitions by measuring the spectrum of molten tetraphenylarsonium tetrachloro-ferrate (III) in a 1-mm cell. He reported that the spectrum of this compound in the solid state, in acetone solution, and the molten state were essentially identical and, since the solid has been shown to contain the FeCl4" entity as a flattened tetrahedral species having symmetry, it would seem that a similar species is present in the melt.
