Fear, of speaking

Next comes the realization that your feeling has served its purpose. You felt fearful of speaking in public because you once had such a fragile sense of self that you needed to protect yourself from every possible occasion for ridicule—but you re stronger than that now. You felt sad about a broken romance, but you re done with mourning and ready to move on. You felt angry about a perceived injustice—but you ve responded to the best of your ability and must now let your anger go. 

Fear of chemical attack has become an integral part of 21 century life. Such an attack can come at any time and its consequences are difficult to calculate. While weapons experts can provide descriptions of its effects, they speak in terms of posabilities, not probabilities, because the magnitude of the threat is uncertain and the likelihood of its occurrence unknowable. 

If you are single, you might experience self-consciousness when you meet someone new. If you feel nervous to speak or a bit uncomfortable about doing things wrong, you are feeling the fear of rejection. Here is a test. The next time you are in a social situation, pick someone across the room that you do not know. Walk right up to them and strike up a conversation. In many people, the level of anxiety in this scenario is in direct proportion with the level of self-consciousness you have. 

The core features of social phobia center on the intense, irrational fear of scrutiny of others and the anticipation of humiliation (Table 25-2). Individuals with this disorder avoid or endure with marked distress the phobic situations. They realize that their fear is unreasonable or excessive. The disorder has been divided into subtypes. Individuals who have anxiety in well-circumscribed situations (e.g., public speaking) have been designated as having a performance subtype those who experience anxiety in a broader spectrum of interpersonal social situations are designated as having a generalized subtype of social phobia. Henceforth, the child may be reluctant to bring up differences for fear of getting hurt in conflict. Better to hear the child out so that he or she feels valued for speaking up "We re glad to know your opinion, even though we re not going to change our minds."... 

Eor some reason we develop this fear of The Formal Presentation. Not confident in ourselves or our speaking style, we adopt a false formal style that quickly sounds like the worst nineteenth-century legalese. See Section 28.5.2 for some tips on dealing with anxiety. 

All this is at the expense of the billions spent on conventional cancer treatments and everything that goes with it. But it shows no improvement in overall survival rates. Instead of speaking of the cancer industry, somehow medical welfare seems equally appropriate for both the research and the practice. A fear has been instilled, which sends the victim rushing to organized medicine for assistance, a fear that is justified, considering the inadequacy of medical orthodoxy in combating cancer. 

For anxiety due to fear of flying or after dinner speaking for example a one-off treatment with a benzodiazepine or a P-blocker may be justified. 

To speak of the fear of AIDS is, of course, to understate the case, just as it is an understatement to speak simply of negrophobia. The loathing relative to AIDS is far more radical than the affective condition of fear suggests. We are facing, rather, what Dean (2000) describes as wholesale repudiation by a society that refuses to admit a signifier for AIDS (99). 

Although the United States and Russia (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics [USSR]) were, formally speaking, allies during World War II, the postwar occupation of Eastern Europe by the USSR behind an iron curtain, its mercurial and murderous Communist leader Joseph Stalin (1879-1953), and the pervasive fear of nuclear weapons contributed to the start of the cold war. The USSR detonated its first atomic bomb in 1949 and the ensuing arms race would dominate the second half of the 20th cenmry.
