In recent years, a new class of collectors, consisting of xanthated fatty acids (TY collector), and monoester-modified xanthate (PM230) have found industrial applications with improved metallurgical results. From plant practice, treating oxide copper and copper cobalt ores, two basic flotation methods are practiced (a) sulphidization flotation method, and (b) anionic flotation method. 

Froth flotation has proven to be an efficient method of removing titaniferous impurities (mainly iron-rich anatase) from kaolin clays. Fatty acid reagent, primarily tall oil, is used extensively in the reverse flotation of these impurities. This flotation collector typically requires divalent cations (usually Ca +) to activate the coloured impurities and enhance collector adsorption. This is not very selective since the tall oil can also absorb on the kaolinite particles. Alkyl hydroxamate collectors are relatively new in the kaolin industry but provide significant advantages. Hydroxamates do not require activators, substantially increase the removal of colored impurities and are very selective. 

The potash contains clay minerals, often as slime. This clay represents a large surface area and adsorbs the alkylamine collector. This is detrimental to the potash flotation, and therefore several methods are used to dispose of the clay. Mechanical de-sliming using hydrocyclones and hydroseparators is common practice. Slime flotation is often used. In this, the clay minerals are separated in a pre-flotation step by using a polymer and a non-ionic surfactant, for example, polyacrylamide and ethoxylated fatty acid, respectively. An alternate way is to depress the clay minerals with polymers such as sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), potato starch and lignosulfonate. 

Although fatty acids and related soaps have been widely applied in the flotation of oxidize minerals, their flotation performance is still bad. Because of their bad selectivities and solubilities, ore pulps must be heated when fatty acids and related soaps are used in the flotation process.
