Compounds of the general formulation M Al2(CHs)6XJi— where M = alkali metal, tetraalkylammonium ion and X = Ns, SCN", SeCN, Cl, Br, 7"—react in a visually dramatic fashion with small aromatic molecules to form non-stoichio-metric liquid complexes. In the most favorable situation, as many as 16 benzene molecules are trapped per anionic unit. Because of similarity to the well known solid-state clath-rates, the designation liquid clathrate is used for the new substances. The term is not meant to imply order as in the solid state, but to convey the method of interaction of M[Al2(C 112)6X1 unth aromatic molecules. The liquid cloth-rate may consist of either roughly spherical or layerlike domains the latter is supported by the x-ray crystallographi-cally determined structure of K CHsSe Al(CHs)s s1 2CsHs. 

Technical developments over recent decades mean that synthetic leathers now offer real design alternative to leather offering both technical and aesthetic opportunities. The use of microfibril fibres (Assent et al., 2003, p. 539) and air- and moisture-permeable PU has improved the quality of synthetic leather products. Trade name products such as Clarino, Alcantara, Sofrina, and Lorica are examples of such materials. The improved properties of these materials require a higher market price. The fabrics, therefore, find application in high-end and luxury products. Alcantara, in particular, is used in high-end or luxury domestic, contract, fashion and accessories, automotive, and interior markets.
