In 1988 the organic unit on Chisel Farm measured 120 ha, from which beef cattle and lambs were produced. Twelve years later (2000) the [Pg.160]

On this large organic unit there was a dairy herd of 300 cows, mostly Shorthorns, 310 beef animals of one year or more, 178 beef animals of less than a year, 425 breeding ewes (mainly Mules) and 1000 to 1500 store lambs. The number of store lambs bought in depended on grass availability. [Pg.161]

For the cattle, native breeds were preferred, with Shorthorn, Angus, Devon, Hereford and Welsh Black predominating. The sheep were a mixture, but Texel and Charolais were the most popular terminal sires. [Pg.161]

The yearling cattle were out at grass during most of the year, except for the winter months when they were fed only silage. The older cattle received silage during their second winter, with 500 g of wheat daily, and were finished before the spring. [Pg.161]

The sheep were never housed, nor were they fed anything other than grass. As for grazing, they were either pastured on the hilly fields or followed the cattle. [Pg.161]

Not surprisingly, costs are several times higher than conventional wells. Nevertheless, overall project economics may favour ERD over other development options. For example, BP developed the offshore part of the Wytch Farm Oilfield (which is located under Poole Harbour in Dorset, UK) from an onshore location. The wells targeted the reservoir at a vertical depth of 1,500 meters with a lateral displacement of over 8,000 meters (Fig. 3.20). The alternative was to build a drilling location on an artificial island in Poole Bay. ERD probably saved a considerable amount of money and advanced first oil by several years. [Pg.51]

This organisation, run by Josef Finke in Ireland, has developed into a large-scale organic business, in a similar manner to that of Karl Barton at Chisel Farm in Dorset. [Pg.162]
