Animal welfare is an issue that is, at the moment, subject to these kinds of differentiation regarding standards and assurance schemes (Roux and Miele, 2005). A number of initiatives have been taken both within and in parallel to organic production systems, all with the aim of improving farm animal welfare, but with rather diverse standards and expectations. 

The first crop assurance scheme to be introduced in 1996 was Assured Produce for growers supplying vegetable and salad crops. This was an initiative by the producers themselves, putting in place a system, which not only recorded farming operations and inputs, but also allowed external scratiny or verification of the production systems. The voluntary introduction of the scheme aimed to demonstrate to supermarkets that field vegetables and salad crops were grown... 

Crop Assurance Schemes are an integral part of the food supply chain required to ensure food quality and safety of farm produce. 

Most merchants now only buy grain that comes from farms that have been assured by a registered assurance scheme. These schemes include strict codes on crop production and grain storage.
