Fold up a filter cone out of a piece of filter paper (Fig. 42). It should fit nicely, within a single centimeter or so of the top of the funnel. For those who wish to filter with more panache, try using fluted filter paper (see world famous fan-folded fluted filter paper, Fig. 52). [Pg.95]

OK. Now try a fan fold. You alternately fold, first in one direction then the other, every individual eighth section of the semicircle (Fig. 51). [Pg.108]

It ll be a bit difficult, but try to find the two opposing sections that are NOT folded correctly. Fold them inward (Fig. 52), and you ll have a fantastic fan-folded fluted filter paper of your very own. [Pg.108]

P.S. For those with more money than patience, prefolded fan-folded fluted filter paper is available from suppliers. [Pg.109]

If beds that are horizontal, or nearly so, suddenly dip at a high angle, then the feature they form is termed a monocline (Fig. 2.4c). When traced along their strike, monoclines may flatten out eventually or pass into a normal fault indeed, they often are formed as a result of faulting at depth. Isoclinal folds are those in which both the limbs and the axial plane are parallel (Fig. 2.4d). A fan fold is one in which both limbs are folded (Fig. 2.4e). [Pg.50]

In contrast, according to Fan and colleagues (Fan et al, 2002), the intramolecular folding ability of nucleosome arrays appeared to be facilitated by H2A.Z. [Pg.74]

In contrast, the results of Fan et al. [375] using 208-12 nucleosome arrays that had been reconstituted with a full set of recombinant histones showed that rH2A.Z enhanced the intramolecular folding of these complexes while simultaneously inhibiting the formation of higher folding structures that result from intermolecular... [Pg.270]

For linear PE, the initial structure formed is a single crystal with folded chain lamellae. These quickly lead to the formation of sheaflike structures called axialites or hedrites. As growth proceeds, the lamellae develop on either side of a central reference point. They continue to fan out, occupying increasing volume sections through the formation of additional lamellae at appropriate branch points. The result is the formation of spherulites as pictured in Figures 2.15 and 2.16. [Pg.36]

Sterilizing filtration is usually performed using commercially available membrane filter units of standard design. These arc normally installed in special cartridges that often are made from polypropylene. Figure 10.5 [5] shows the sectional views of a membrane filter of folding fan-like structure, which uses a pleated membrane to increase the membrane area. [Pg.161]

The eggs of B. germanica contain the same types of hydrocarbons as the hemolymph, HDLp, and cuticle of the adult female. Only 150 pg of hydrocarbons accumulate on the epicuticular surface whereas up to 450 pg accumulate within the female during the period of egg maturation (Fan et al., 2002). The internal hydrocarbons are divided primarily between the ovaries, fat body, and 150 pg of HDLp-bound hydrocarbons in the hemolymph. During oocyte maturation ovarian hydrocarbons increase by more than 65-fold - from 3.5 pg on day-1 to 232 pg on day-8 (Fan et al., 2002). However, after oviposition on day-9, ovarian hydrocarbons decline to only 8.2 pg, demonstrating that hydrocarbons were associated with the ovulated oocytes. Radiotracing results indicate that they serve as components of the cuticular lipids of the embryos and first instars (Fan and Schal, unpublished results). [Pg.308]

Fan and Zhang determined acetylcholine and choline in rat brain tissue by a fluorescence immunoassay method, making use of immobilized enzymes and chemiluminescence detection [50]. Tissue was homogenized with a 10 fold volume of 0.6 M HC104, the homogenates were kept on ice for 30 min, and then centrifuged at 2000 G for 20 min. The pellets were... [Pg.72]
