Fallen lime

Mix together nitrate of lime and snow. To produce the greatest effect, equal parts of the salt findy powdered and newly fallen snow must be quickly mixed together. TUs mixture has been used to freeze mercury. 

Place the lime in a metal or earthenware vessel furnished with a lid pour the water upon it, and when vapour ceases to be disengaged, cover the vessel with its lid, and set it aside to cool. When the temperature has fallen to that of the atmosphere, put the slaked lime on an iron-wire sieve, i d, by gentle agitation, cause the fine powder to pass through the sieve, and reject what is left. Put the powder into a well-stoppered bottle, and keep it excluded as much as possible ftom the air, to prevent its absorbing carbonic anhydride. In the process of slaking, lime unites chemically with water. 

Corrective water treatments of Glasgow s water supplies were applied in 1979 (lime to raise pH) and again in the mid-1980s (additional dosing of ortho-phosphate). Table 4.2 summarises the reductions in water lead and blood lead that were achieved, based on the study by Moore et al. (1998). In another study by Watt et al. (2000), the geometric mean blood lead concentration in the year 2000 had fallen to 3.7 pg/dl compared to 11.9 pg/dl 12 years previously.
