Another fuel cell design is the molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) (Yuh, 1995), which operates in the temperature range 620-660°C with an efficiency of >50%. FuelCell Energy, Inc. (Danbury, CT) produces MCEC units. These units are designed as back-up generators for intermittent use. The operational lifetimes of fuel cell systems need to be extended. In order to do so, it is necessary to limit component corrosion. 

The electrolyte constitutes a separator for the gas flows shown in Fig. 3.16, in addition to providing ionic transport. Physically, it consists of a compressed powder behaving as a soft paste at the operating temperatures, thus substantiating the name "molten carbonate" for the liquid Li-Na or Li-K carbonates inhabiting the electrolyte substrate. The LiAlOj material used for the support structure can exist in three different forms (phase a, P and fj, and transitions have been observed (e.g., yto d) after extended fuel cell operation... 

The rate of corrosion of metal electrodes in molten carbonates has to be small if the fuel cells are to perform satisfactorily for a reasonable length of time. Littlewood [18] extended the thermodynamic treatment of corrosion in aqueous electrolytes developed by Pourbaix [19] (compare section 1 in chapter XII) to molten chlorides by constructing plots of the reversible potential U ev of possible reaction versus pO . The acidity of the melt is expressed by Eq. 6.
