Expert resistance factor

These outrage factors arc not distortions in the public s perception of risk. They are inborn parts of what is interpreted as risk. They are explanations of why the public fears pollutants in the air and water more tlum tliey do geological radon. The problem is that many risk experts resist tlie use of the public s "irrational fear" in their risk management. 

Nevertheless, where it is difficult for a computer to learn expert system rules, the traditional expert system still has a place. A typical recent example of the use of expert systems is provided by the work of Dobrzanski and Madejski62 who have developed a prototype system for determining metal coating that provides an optimum combination of appearance, abrasion resistance, color, and other factors. A less scientific, but still intriguing, example of the use of these systems is HuskEval, an expert system for evaluating the quality of Siberian Huskies.63... 

In 1987, the US National Institutes of Health reviewed existing worldwide data on the prevalence of antibiotic resistance (51). They concluded that resistance to antibiotics was not solely a function of usage, but might result from the inevitable process of bacterial evolution. Other phenomena, including increased human resistance to antibiotics never used in animals and the prevalence of antibiotic resistance in developing countries where use of animal antibiotics is uncommon, led the experts to support that human antibiotic resistance should primarily be due to a variety of factors other than animal antibiotics. 

Many experts believe that treating insulin resistance in the prediabetic state or after type 2 diabetes has become manifest may prevent or delay the development and progression of type 2 diabetes (111). Because insulin resistance is an underlying factor in P-cell failure and in other concomitants of type 2 diabetes such as obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, early resolution of insulin resistance in the at-risk population may also reduce critical cardiovascular risk factors and thus prevent the development of late arterial and renal complications (115). 

Antimicrobial snsceptibihty testing for M. avium complex is less standardized owing to snch factors as its intrinsic antimicrobial resistance and the presence of different colony variants that have differing antimicrobial snsceptibihties. Nonetheless, the broth radiometric method appears to be the most consistent and reproducible method for quantitative MIC determination, and it has been advocated for use by the NCCLS and leading experts in mycobacteriology.
