Experimental procedure spectroscopy

The most appropriate experimental procedure is to treat the metal in UHV, controlling the state of the surface with spectroscopic techniques (low-energy electron diffraction, LEED atomic emission spectroscopy, AES), followed by rapid and protected transfer into the electrochemical cell. This assemblage is definitely appropriate for comparing UHV and electrochemical experiments. However, the effect of the contact with the solution must always be checked, possibly with a backward transfer. These aspects are discussed in further detail for specific metals later on. 

The equilibrium concentrations of Rh2(CO)s and Rh4(CO)i2 were determined by infrared spectroscopy by monitoring the absorbance of the band at 1886.8 cm-1, which corresponds to the stretching of the bridging carbonyls of the tetrarhodium complex. More details of the experimental procedure can be found in the original papers. For our purpose, it is enough to say that the equilibrium concentrations of the rhodium complexes were quite low (< 10-3 mol dm-3), but the same was not true for the CO concentration ( 2 mol dm-3 see...

The simplest ligand is N2 itself. Using matrix isolation techniques the IR spectra of Pt(N2) (n = 1, 2, 3) show v(N=N) in the range 2170.0-2211.5 cm-1 and v(Pt—N) in the range 360-394 cm-1. By using isotopically labeled N2, accurate force constants have been calculated.917 Using a similar experimental procedure, the compounds Pt(02)(N2) ( = 1, 2) have been observed in a cooled matrix by IR spectroscopy.918...

Spectroscopic Methods.—N.M.R. Spectroscopy. Most of the significant work reported this year has been concerned with 13C n.m.r. spectroscopy, which now finds widespread applications in steroid chemistry. Steroids have been used as model compounds in the development and evaluation of new experimental procedures. 

This book intends to supply the basic information necessary to apply the methods of vibrational spectroscopy, to design experimental procedures, to perform and evaluate experiments. It does not intend to provide a market survey of the instruments which are available at present, because such information would very soon be outdated. However, the general principles of the instruments and their accessories, which remain valid, are discussed. Details concerning sample preparation and the recording of the spectra, which is the subject of introductory courses, are assumed to be known. Special procedures which are described in monographs, such as Fourier transformation or chemometric methods, are also not exhaustively described. This book has been written for graduate students as well as for experienced scientists who intend to update their knowledge.
