Excessive signal levels

The two sections of the multiplier are separated by a special gate electrode. In the presence of very high signal levels, the gate electrode can be activated to gate off the pulse-counting part of the detector to protect it from excessive signal levels and thus extend its operational life. 

Various protective instruments are used to provide a shutdown signal (to a fast-acting trip valve at the expander inlet) that senses various things, such as overspeed, lubricant pressure, bearing temperature, lubricant temperature, shaft runout, icing, lubricant level, thrustbearing load, and process variables such as sensitive temperatures, levels, pressures, etc. However, too many safety shutdown devices may lead to excessive nuisance shutdowns. 

If the radiofrequency power is too high, the normal relaxation processes will not be able to compete with the sudden excitation (or perturbation), and thermal equilibrium will not be achieved. The population difference (Boltzmann distribution excess) between the energy levels (a and )8) will decrease to zero, and the intensity of the absorption signal will also therefore become zero.
