The calculation of a specific relaxation s activation energy is the main reason why DMA was developed. When the molecular structure is known, theoretical calculations can be made for certain bonds rotating and/or stretching. These theoretical results can then be compared to the measured activation energies. If agreement is obtained, then we can be confident that this is the mechanism that operates. Where differences arise, either the deformational mechanism may be more complex than the modelling or, alternatively, the material may not have the structure postulated. Therefore this is an extremely powerful tool for polymer synthesists. [Pg.147]
