Because both acids and bases may be either strong or weak, four possible combinations of acid-base reactions may occur. Table 15.1 summarizes the possibilities. As you wdl find out later in this section, only three of the types are significant in everyday chemistry. 

In everyday language, the word salt implies sodium chloride, NaCl, table salt. In the language of chemistry, however, salt is a general term meaning any ionic compound formed from the reaction between an acid and a base.
