There is no entirely satisfactory method for estimating these losses. Kern (1950) suggests adding four velocity heads per pass. Frank (1978) considers this to be too high, and recommends 2.5 velocity heads. Butterworth (1978) suggests 1.8. Lord et al. (1970) take the loss per pass as equivalent to a length of tube equal to 300 tube diameters for straight tubes, and 200 for U-tubes whereas Evans (1980) appears to add only 67 tube diameters per pass. [Pg.668]

In 1910, Scott set off on his famous and ill-fated expedition to the South Pole. Fruit juice was carried, but the men were not ordered to consume it. Fresh meat was carried in abundance at the beginning. There was no doubt that during the expedition. Lieutenant Edward Evans (later Admiral Lord Evans), contracted scurvy, from which he later recovered. There appears to be no evidence that scurvy contributed to the deaths of Scott, Evans, Oates, and Wilson, though it has been suggested that the circumstances of Evans s death were such that scurvy could have been a contributory factor. Such a suggestion at that time would have been regarded as scandalous. [Pg.15]
