The Emopean Council for Plasticisers and Intermediates put European consumption of plasticisers at 958,000 tonnes in 2001. It is now believed to be over one million tonnes. Flexible PVC has shown poor growth in Europe in recent years, even more noticeably than in the US. Growth has slowed to 1.6% in Western Europe and exports have dropped, leading to reduced capacity utilisation, lower profitability, and rationalisation caused by oversupply.
