Eugenol 2- methoxy-4- phenol

Eugenol, 4 allyl-2-methoxy phenol, is capable of forming cements with ZnO, CuO, MgO, CaO, CdO, PbO and HgO (Brauer, White Moshonas, 1958 Nielsen, 1963). Other 2-methoxy phenols are also capable of forming cements with metal oxides, provided the allyl group is not in a 3- or 6-position where it sterically hinders the reaction (Brauer, Argentar Durany, 1964). These include guaiacol, 2-methoxyphenol, and the allyl and propylene 2-methoxy phenols. 

The combination of GC with FTIR and MS detection has been used for a variety of applications [138-142]. In all of these the GC effluent is spht through a tee and each branch goes to one of the two detectors. Examples include a sample from suspected clandestine use of a chemical laboratory showed phenyl-2-propanone and other compounds indicative of methamphetamine production, the concentration of benzene, toluene, the xylene isomers, and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene in a gasoline, the trace contaminants in solvents used in semiconductor manufacture, the three flavor essence isomers eugenol, and ds-and trans- isoeugenol (4-allyl-2-methoxy-phenol and ds- and trans- 2-methoxy-4-propenylphenol), and the components in a perfume sample. In the last of these, the sample was previously ran by GC-AED with C, H, O, and N detection to augment the other two types of detectors. 

Eugenol is a type of phenol, and as such is weakly acidic. Its systematic chemical name is 4-allyl-2-methoxy phenol, and it has the structure shown in Fig. 10.3 [22]. Like all acids, it can only manifest its acidic character in the presence of water. In principle, the mixture of zinc oxide with eugenol can obtain its water from the moisture present in the mouth but in practice, if it does so, it sets only slowly [19]. Oil of cloves (from Eugenia caryophyllata) is rich in eugenol (4-allyl-2- methoxy-phenol). Caryophyllene is present in small amounts, along with other terpenes. Eugenol (bp 250°C) is a phenol, or an aromatic hydroxy compound. 

The methyl ether of eugenol, CjjHj 02, is found in calamus oil, cassie oU, betel oil, bay oil, and various other essential oils. It can be prepared artificially by the action of methyl iodide on eugenol sodium. Its constitution is identical with that of eugenol, except that the phenolic group, OH, has been replaced by the methoxy group, O. CHg.
