Eugenol 2- methoxy-4- phenol

Eugenol, 4 allyl-2-methoxy phenol, is capable of forming cements with ZnO, CuO, MgO, CaO, CdO, PbO and HgO (Brauer, White Moshonas, 1958 Nielsen, 1963). Other 2-methoxy phenols are also capable of forming cements with metal oxides, provided the allyl group is not in a 3- or 6-position where it sterically hinders the reaction (Brauer, Argentar Durany, 1964). These include guaiacol, 2-methoxyphenol, and the allyl and propylene 2-methoxy phenols. [Pg.321]

The combination of GC with FTIR and MS detection has been used for a variety of applications [138-142]. In all of these the GC effluent is spht through a tee and each branch goes to one of the two detectors. Examples include a sample from suspected clandestine use of a chemical laboratory showed phenyl-2-propanone and other compounds indicative of methamphetamine production, the concentration of benzene, toluene, the xylene isomers, and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene in a gasoline, the trace contaminants in solvents used in semiconductor manufacture, the three flavor essence isomers eugenol, and ds-and trans- isoeugenol (4-allyl-2-methoxy-phenol and ds- and trans- 2-methoxy-4-propenylphenol), and the components in a perfume sample. Eugenol is a type of phenol, and as such is weakly acidic. Its systematic chemical name is 4-allyl-2-methoxy phenol, and it has the structure shown in Fig. 10.3 [22]. Like all acids, it can only manifest its acidic character in the presence of water.
