Eucalyptol eucalyptus

Bornane monoterpenes are exemplified by camphene (2,2-dimethyl-3-methylene-bicyclo[2,2,1]heptane), a structure in which two fused cyclopentane rings share three Cs. We can simply represent the camphene skeleton as a cyclohexane with a methylene (—CH2—) cross-link (G6(-CH2—)). The keto derivative camphor (camphor smell), the ether eucalyptol (eucalyptus smell) and the simple bornene a-pinene (pine smell) are familiar examples. [Pg.35]

Rectified oils have been redistilled to improve a particular property or characteristic, such as flavor or aroma. Eor example, natural oil of peppermint is frequently rectified to remove dimethyl sulfide, which has a powerful and objectionable cooked vegetable note deleterious to the use of the oil in cmme de menthe Hqueurs. Distillation is also used to remove psoralens, which are harmful photosensitizing agents present in natural bergamot oil. Color may be removed, eg, from cassia oil, by vacuum steam distillation. A desirable component, such as 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) 85% in eucalyptus oil, may be... [Pg.296]

This body, CjoHjgO, has been described under several names, the best known being that now usually adopted, viz. cineol also cajuputol (from its occurrence in oil of cajuput) and eucalyptol (from its occurrence in oil of eucalyptus). It is found in nature in very large quantities in the above-mentioned oils, as well as in many others, notably wormseed, lavender (English), and spike-lavender oils. It results also by the... [Pg.276]

Self-Test 4.11A The oil produced from eucalyptus leaves contains the volatile organic compound eucalyptol. At 190.°C and 60.0 Torr, a sample of eucalyptol vapor had a density of 0.320 g-L . Calculate the molar mass of eucalyptol. [Pg.274]

The oil from eucalyptus leaves contains eucalyptol, a chemical that makes it a very powerful antiseptic. [Pg.133]

Eucalyptol (1,8-cineole was also called cajuputol) The most commonly encountered oxide in aromatherapy. Found in eucalyptus, cajeput and worm-seed essential oils. It is a very chemically stable molecule and has a camphorlike smell. [Pg.76]

The oxide 1,8-cineole (also called eucalyptol) is often described as a skin irritant. It is a major component in Eucalyptus globulus (up to around 90%), which has GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status. Within the oil it is attributed beneficial effects such as antiseptic and expectorant. The other components present are again the hydrocarbon terpenes a-pinene, limonene, cymene, phellandrene, terpinene and aromadendrene. [Pg.128]

Eucalyptus leaves are the food source for panda bears. Eucalyptol is an oil found in these leaves. Analysis of eucalyptol indicates it has a molar mass of 154 g/mol and contains 77.87% C, 11.76% H, and 10.37% O. Determine the molecular formula of eucalyptol. [Pg.877]

The German standard dose for the compound eucalyptol is 200 mg three times daily (Juergens et al. 2003). This is equivalent to approximately 0.35 ml of eucalyptus essential oil. [Pg.349]

Eucalyptus essential oil contains 70 to 80% of the compound eucalyptol (also called 1,8-cineole or 1,8-epoxy-p-menthane) (Chennoufi et al. 1980 De Vincenzi et al. 2002 ... [Pg.349]
