2-Ethylhexane-l,3-diol

Reaction of 2,4-diorgano-l,3-diols, such as 2-ethylhexane-l,3-diol, with TYZOR TPT in a 2 1 molar ratio gives the solvent soluble titanate complex, TYZOR OGT [5575-43-9] (4) (73). If the reaction is conducted in an inert solvent, such as hexane, and the resultant slurry is treated with an excess of water, an oligomeric hydrolysis product, also solvent-soluble, is obtained (74). 

To a round-bottomed flask (50 ml) equipped with a long-necked adapter, reflux condenser, and a magnetic stirrer bar, add 2-ethylhexane-l,3-diol (2.6 g, 20 mmol, hydrogen peroxide (30% solution) (2.72 g, 24 mmol), sodium tungstate dihydrate (0.19 g, 0.58 mmol), and TBAHS (0.20 g, 0.59 mmol). 

Butanal is the starting material for the synthesis of the mosquito repellent 6-12 (2-ethylhexane-l,3-diol). The first step is an aldol condensation, and the second step is reduction of the aldehyde group to a primary alcohol.
