Reduction of nitro esters to amino esters is easy, since most of the reagents used for the reduction of a nitro group to an amino group do not attack the ester group. Ethyl 2-chloro-4-nitrobenzoate was quantitatively hydrogenated to either ethyl 2-chloro-4-aminobenzoate or 4-aminobenzoate over palladium [7057].

The herbicides, acifluorfen 5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]-2-nitrobenzoic acid) (0.56 kg ai/ha) and bentazon [3-(1-methylethyl)-(IH)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-one 2,2-dioxide] (0.56 to 1.1 kg ai/ha), or the insecticides, malathion [diethyl(dimethoxyphosphinothioylthio)succinate] (0.56 kg ai/ha) and carbofuran (2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-benzofuranyl methylcarbamate), (0.56 kg ai/ha) could be applied with CGA from a single tank mixture (33-34). ...

First, 101 mg of methyl 3-chloro-2-nitrobenzoate (0.470 mmol), 86.0 mg of phenylboronic acid (0.700 mmol), 2.1 mg of Pd(OAc)2 (9.4 mmol, 2 mol%), SPhos (12 mg, 28.2 mmol, 6 mol%), and 300 mg of potassium phosphate (1.41 mmol) were placed in a vial under argon. Tetrahydrofiiran (1 mL) and water (10 pi) were added. The reaction mixture was stirred for 4 h at 40 °C and filtered. After removing the solvent under reduced pressure, the crude product was purified by column chromatography (cyclohexane/ethyl acetate 7 1).
