Japanese group has prepared [2- C]5,5-dimethyl-2,4-oxazohdinedione 230, the penultimate precursor to [2- C]trimethadione via condensation of [ C]urea with ethyl a-hydroxyisobutyrate. 

At a considerably later date. Frankland prepared ethyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid from ethyl a-hydroxyisobutyrate and phosphorus trichloride. Tollen prepared aciylate esters from 2,3-dibromopropionate esters and zinc. Otto Rohm, in 1901. described the structures of the liquid condensation products (including dimers and timers) obtained from the action of sodium alkoxides on methyl and ethyl acrylate. Shortly after World War 1, Rohm introduced a new acrylate synthesis, noting that an acrylate is formed in good yield from heating ethylene cyanohydrin and sulfuric acid and alcohol. A major incentive for the development of a clear, tough plastic acrylate was for use in the manufacture of safety glass. 

Ethyl-a-hydroxyisobutyrate n. C2H5OOC (0H)C(CH3)2. a solvent for cellulose nitrate and cellulose acetate. 

A soln. of 0.5 mole of ethyl a-hydroxyisobutyrate in ether added dropwise to a soln. of p-dimethylaminophenyllithium prepared from 2 moles of p-bromo-dimethylaniline and 4 moles of small pieces of Li-ribbon (preferably containing ca. 0.6% Na) in anhydrous ether under Ng, and refluxed 5 hrs. l,l is-(p-di-methylaminophenyl)-2-methyl-1,2-propanediol.
