Silver nitrite gives a mixture of ethyl nitrite and nitro ethane (p. 131). 

The simpler nitrop>arafIins (nitromethane, nitroethane, 1- and 2-nitroproj)ane) are now cheap commercial products. They are obtained by the vapour phase nitration of the hydrocarbons a gaseous mixture of two mols of hydrocarbon and 1 mol of nitric acid vapour is passed through a narrow reaction tube at 420-476°. Thus with methane at 476° a 13 per cent, conversion into nitro methane is obtained ethane at 420° gives a 9 1 mixture of nitroethane (b.p. 114°) and nitromethane (b.p. 102°) propane at 420° afifords a 21 per cent, yield of a complex mixture of 1- (b.p. 130-6°) and 2-nitropropane (b.p. 120°), nitroethane and nitromethane, which are separated by fractional distillation.

A mixture of 17.6 grams of p-n-butoxyacetophenone, 12.1 grams of piperidine hydrochloride, 4.5 grams paraformaldehyde, 0.25 cc concentrated hydrochloric acid, 52.5 cc nitro-ethane, 7.5 cc of 95% ethanol, and 15 cc of toluene was boiled under reflux for one hour, removing water formed in the reaction by means of a condensate trap. Dinitro-2-butene may be prepared from 1-chloro-l-nitro-ethane by the same procedure, in 30% yield. The compound melts at 28-28.5° and has a boiling point of 135°/11 mm. Commercially available 1-chloro-l-nitroethane contains about 10% 1,1-dichloro-l-nitro-ethane and 2-chloro-2-nitropropane which cannot be separated by distillation, but these impurities do not interfere with the preparation. Distillation of 2,3-dinitro-2-butene behind safety glass in a nitrogen atmosphere is advisable. The submitters, in preparing this compound, have had one explosion over a period of ten years.
