The oxazaborolidines are easily prepared by heating ephedrine with borane dimethyl sulfide or the appropriate boronate ester. The aluminum reagent C is obtained by mixing ephedrine and trimethylaluminum. Borolidinc A is superior to its methyl derivative B and to the aluminum analog C. The diastereomeric borolidine obtained from borane and (S,S)-pseu-doephedrine failed to show any cnantioselectivity25. A variety of aromatic aldehydes can be enantioselectively alkylated in the presence of A, however, with heptanal the enantioselectivity is poor25. [Pg.177]

If a C3 unit needs to be introduced bearing a carbon chain, then there are several options. A P-amino add could be used as a precursor in a parallel synthesis to those discussed above. Alternatively, a strategy based on malonate syntheses could be employed. Co-condensation of a C-substituted malonate with a primary diamine in boiling ethanol gives reasonable yields of cyclic diamide which may be reduced with borane in THF to yield the desired polyamine (Scheme 1.12 and Protocol 5).18 Another possibility is to prepare a linear bis-toluenesulfonate ester from a malonate by reduction (e.g. LiBH4) and tosylation, followed by a standard toluenesulfonamide cyclisation reaction. Yet another variant, this time giving racemic product, is to react a coumarin derivative with a linear polyamine (Scheme 1.12).1819 In this case, a... [Pg.13]

Dilithium tetrachlorocuprate is recommended as an additive for cross coupling of Grignard compounds with tosylates even allylic and benzylic acetates give good yields . a-Methylene-ketones, -carboxylic acids and -lactones have been prepared via sulfides and sulfoxides. A convenient and general synthesis of acetylene derivatives from boranes via the reaction of iodine with lithium 1-alkynyltriorganoborates has been published ar-Nitrostyrenes can be easily obtained by a Wittig synthesis with formaldehyde in an aqueous medium . A new synthesis of unsym. ketones by reaction of dialkyldiloroboranes with lithium aldimines has recently been published . Metallo aldimines have also served for the synthesis of a variety of other compound classes such as a-hydroxyketones, a-keto acids, nitriles, and for the asym. synthesis of a-amino acids . Polycondensations of malononitriles with benzylic chlorides have been carried out quantitatively under mild conditions in dimethyl sulfoxide with triethylamine as acid acceptor . Carbonyl compounds can react with dibromoacetonitrile to yield a-bromo esters with additional carbon atom . ... [Pg.10]

A number of less hindered monoalkylboranes is available by indirect methods, eg, by treatment of a thexylborane—amine complex with an olefin (69), the reduction of monohalogenoboranes or esters of boronic acids with metal hydrides (70—72), the redistribution of dialkylboranes with borane (64) or the displacement of an alkene from a dialkylborane by the addition of a tertiary amine (73). To avoid redistribution, monoalkylboranes are best used /V situ or freshly prepared. However, they can be stored as monoalkylborohydrides or complexes with tertiary amines. The free monoalkylboranes can be hberated from these derivatives when required (69,74—76). Methylborane, a remarkably unhindered monoalkylborane, exhibits extraordinary hydroboration characteristics. It hydroborates hindered and even unhindered olefins to give sequentially alkylmethyl- and dialkylmethylboranes (77—80). [Pg.310]

Most reported boric acid esters are trialkoxy or triaryloxy boranes. The esters range from colorless low boiling Hquids to soHds that possess high melting points. Boric acid esters usually have an odor similar to the hydroxy compound from which they are derived. A more complete description of the physical... [Pg.213]

Alkyl boric acid esters derived from straight-chain alcohols and aryl boric acid esters are stable to relatively high temperatures. Methyl borate is stable to 470°C (11). Trialkoxyboranes from branched-chain alcohols are much less stable, and boranes from tertiary alcohols can even decompose at 100°C (12). Decomposition of branched-chain esters leads to mixtures of olefins, alcohols, and other derivatives. [Pg.214]

The main chemical products produced from these minerals are (a) boron oxides, boric acid and borates, (b) esters of boric acid, (c) refractory boron compounds (borides, eu .), (d) boron halides, (e) boranes and carbaboranes and (f) organoboranes. The main industrial and domestic uses of boron compounds in Europe (USA in parentheses) are ... [Pg.140]

The (acyloxy)borane complex 9, readily available from tartaric acid derivative 8, also catalyzes aldol additions of silyl enol ethers34 and silylketene acetals3 5 in an enantioselective manner. Thus,. u -ketones 10 and /Thydroxy esters 12 are available34, as well as a-unsubstituted ketones 1135. [Pg.582]

The predominant formation of ann -carboxylic esters and thioesters results when the additives 13 or 14 are used to mediate aldol additions of silylketene acetals derived from propionates and propanethioates37. The enantioselective addition of a-unsubstituted esters or thioesters is also feasible with the borane 1437. [Pg.582]

Trialkylboranes react rapidly and in high yields with a-halo ketones,a-halo esters, a-halo nitriles, and a-halo sulfonyl derivatives (sulfones, sulfonic esters, sulfonamides) in the presence of a base to give, respectively, alkylated ketones, esters, nitriles, and sulfonyl derivatives. Potassium tert-butoxide is often a suitable base, but potassium 2,6-di-tert-butylphenoxide at 0°C in THF gives better results in most cases, possibly because the large bulk of the two tert-buXy groups prevents the base from coordinating with the R3B. The trialkylboranes are prepared by treatment of 3 mol of an alkene with 1 mol of BH3 (15-16). With appropriate boranes, the R group transferred to a-halo ketones, nitriles, and esters can be vinylic, or (for a-halo ketones and esters) aryl. " °... [Pg.560]
