Esters dimerization

Acryhc esters dimerize to give the 2-methylene glutaric acid esters catalyzed by tertiary organic phosphines (37) or organic phosphorous triamides, phosphonous diamides, or phosphinous amides (38). Yields of 75—80% dimer, together with 15—20% trimer, are obtained. Reaction conditions can be varied to obtain high yields of trimer, tetramer, and other polymers.

In the absence of a trichloromethyl group in the enamine structure, the process follows a different route. Thus, the cyanoacetic ester dimer reacts with cyanogen bromide at its active methylene group with a ring closure... 

Ollis, and Ramsden520 treated 99, 100 and 101 with neat EPP and obtained the pyrazole 103 and the phenylpropiolic ester dimer 104, but no 105. A comparative study was carried out with phenylacetylene. When 100 was heated with DM AD in dioxane, 25% of the pyrazole 106 was obtained. These authors have concluded that the cycloaddition of alkynes to isosydnones is analogous to that of sydnones but the reactions are slower and the cycloadducts are obtained in lower yields. 

The ethylcysteinate dimer (ECD) belongs to the family of neutral, lipophilic tetradentate diaminedithiol ligands. The x-ray structure (Fig. 2.1.9) shows the functionalized ester dimer with a Tc(V)oxo core in a square pyramidal configuration (Watson et al. 1987). In fact, its high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) behavior is the same for the Tc and Tc-ECD complex (Edwards et al. 1990). 

The yield of the dimer may reach 90% with protonic acids initiators in solvents of low polarity 4B). With alkyl halides and esters dimerization stops at the non-strained N-alkyl piperazinium salt stage49 ...
