An aqueous ethanolic (50%) extract of fresh leaves of H. coronarium from Brazil showed hypotensive [209] and diuretic [216] activities in rat. Leaf essential oil ofH. coronarium had anti-bacterial activity [217]. Stems ofH. coronarium were reported to possess anti-cercarial activity [218]. An ethanolic extract of the stems of H, coronarium showed anti-malarial activity against Plasmodium falciparum and also possessed cytotoxic activity [211]. Essential oils have also been examined for their direct effect, both in vitro and in vivo, against Herpetomonas, Leishmania, Plasmodium, and Trypanosoma species.
