The Rh factor was first recognised in 1940 and shortly afterwards its role in the etiology of erythroblastosis foetalis was described. Later the Rh positive red cells from the foetus were incriminated as bearing the antigen responsible for antibody formation in the mother in erythroblastosis. The proof of the transplacental passage of foetal erythrocytes eventually came with the detection of the foetal cells in the maternal circulatory system. [Pg.329]
