Ergot alkaloids (ergotamine, ergonovine) also exhibit certain nonselective a-adrenoblocking activity however, they primarily exhibit spasmogenic action on smooth muscle, causing a constriction of blood vessels. 

Ergot alkaloids were the first adrenoblockers to be studied. Despite the fact that the majority of ergot alkaloids exhibit a-adrenoblocking activity, their pharmacology is often different. In terms of chemistry, ergotamine and ergonovine are derivatives of lysergic acid. 

In 1935 ergometrine was discovered in four different laboratories almost simultaneously and described under four different names (74, 75, 76, 77). Although the names ergometrine and ergobasine have remained in use in Europe, ergonovine was adopted in the USA as the official nomenclature for the specific uterotonic ergot alkaloid.
