Ionic solids dissolve in water until they are in equiiibrium with their ions. An equiiibrium expression can be written from the balanced chemical equation of the solid s dissociation. Concentrations of the ions can be determined from the balanced chemical equation and solubility data. The ion concentrations can then be used to determine the value of the equilibrium constant. The numerical value for the equilibrium constant can be used to predict whether precipitation occurs when soiutions of various concentrations are combined.
