Seizure Epilepsy

For catamenial epilepsy (seizures just before or during menses) or seizures that occur at the time of ovulation, conventional AEDs should be tried first, but hormonal therapy (progestational agents) may also be effective. Intermittent acetazolamide has also been used.

Phosphoglycerate kinase deficiency, the seventh enzyme step of the glycolytic pathway, is an inherited X-linked recessive disorder, meaning it mostly affects males, although females are carriers. Onset is infancy to early adulthood. Symptoms may include anaemia, enlargement of the spleen, mental retardation and epilepsy (seizures) more rarely, weakness, exercise intolerance, muscle cramps and episodes of myoglobinuria occur.

The dose of fluoroquinolones should be lowered in patients with hepatic (liver) or renal (kidney) problems. Carefully monitor the serum level of fluoroquinolones for patients who have CNS disorders such as cerebral arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries in the brain), epilepsy (seizures), or alcoholism because they are at risk for CNS toxicity.
