Reik There is another way of doing it. This can be determined quite precisely. For example, in Schi osaccharomyces pomhe the grand parental DNA strands are marked epigenetically to affect mating type switching. 

First, it should be noted that most of the modules whose structures were determined so far often represent subdomains of epigenetic effectors. Indeed, a landmark of many of these proteins is to be composed of different modules, some responsible for epigenetic marks recognition and others bearing catalytic activities. 

Sedimentary rocks are composed of epigenetic minerals that have survived weathering and authigenic minerals formed in situ from low-temperature aqueous solution. Since authigenic minerals are formed from aqueous solution at low temperature, they are either amorphous or minute crystalline, and so the texture of sedimentary rocks is principally determined by the sizes and forms of epigenetic minerals.
