Environmental quality standards annual average

Environmental quality standards (EQSs) are widely used to help protect the environment and human health and are considered by many to consist simply of the stated limit value for a substance plus, perhaps, the time over which the standard applies. An example of this might be an annual average EQS for lead in water of 7.2 pg Ir1 to protect the freshwater environment as proposed in the Water Framework Daughter Directive on EQS (European Commission [EC] 2006).

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced in the December 13, 1996 Federal Register (vo. 61, no. 241, pp. 65763-65778) proposed new ozone and particulate matter air quality standards. The O, standard would be changed to 0.08 ppm over an 8-hour averaging time. The revised particulate matter standard is directed toward particles of diameter 2.5 /u,m, denoted PMj s, and would be set at 15 /u,g m, annual mean, and. 50 24-hour average. 

Worldwide, regulations and standards regarding permissible levels of PAHs in ambient air vary somewhat. The maximum permissible concentration in ambient air is 1 ng/m in Soviet Union former and Himgary (Hassanien et al, 1996). In the US, no national ambient air quality standard exists. However, several states have established ambient standards. For B(a)P, these range from 0 to 100 ng/m (8-hour average). In the Netherlands, the Environmental Programme 1988-1991 recommended a draft tolerable B(a)P concentration of 5 ng/m (annual average) (RIVM, 1989) see Table 6.
