Environmental Protection Agency exposure levels

Environmental Levels and Exposures. Barium constitutes about 0.04% of the earth s cmst (47). Agricultural soils contain Ba " in the range of several micrograms per gram. The Environmental Protection Agency, under the Safe Drinking Water Act, has set a limit for barium of 1 mg/L for municipal waters in the United States. [Pg.483]

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identifies the most serious hazardous waste sites in the nation. These sites make up the National Priorities List (NPL) and are the sites targeted for long-term federal cleanup activities. Elevated americium levels have been found in at least 8 of the 1,585 current or former NPL sites. However, the total number of NPL sites evaluated for this substance is not known. As more sites are evaluated, the sites at which americium is found may increase. This information is important because exposure to this substance may harm you and because these sites may be sources of exposure. [Pg.17]

The federal government has developed regulations and advisories to protect individuals from the potential health effects of acrylonitrile in the environment. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that acrylonitrile levels in water not exceed 0.058 ppb. Any release to the environment of more than 100 lb must be reported to the federal government. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has established a legally enforceable maximum limit of 2 ppm in workplace air for an 8-hour exposure over a 40-hour work week. [Pg.13]

XZ/N VI RON MENTAL APPLICATIONS OF CHEMOMETRics are of interest because of the concern about the effects of chemicals on humans. The symposium upon which this book is based served as an important milestone in a process we, the editors, initiated in 1982. As members of the Environmental Protection Agency s Office of Toxic Substances (OTS), we have responsibilities for the acquisition and analysis of human and environmental exposure data in support of the Toxic Substances Control Act. OTS exposure studies invariably are complex and range from evaluating human body burden data (polychlorinated biphenyls in adipose tissue, for example) to documenting airborne asbestos levels in schools. [Pg.293]
