Has a world-wide database of federal and non-profit environmental research organizations that focus on the multiple aspects of global environmental change, including the regional effects on natural ecosystems, environments and resources as well as on human health, culture and social systems. 

An argument can be made that chemistry is a critically important science for understanding the causes and effects of much of the environmental change observed today. Consider the logical progression of ideas already discussed, i.e. 

Although natural selection is the only evolutionary agent that adapts organisms to their environments, the course of evolution has been profoundly influenced by major environmental changes, some of which had catastrophic effects. Some of these events resulted from Earth s internal processes, such as the activity of volcanoes and the shifting and colliding of continents. Others were the result of external events, such as collision of meteorites with Earth. 

Changes in species composition and diversity will affect the functioning of ecosystems most strongly when species differ in their effects on ecosystem processes or in their response to environmental changes. 

Because biomagnification and other transport processes take time, the harmful effect of many compoimds may not become evident for decades. This makes direct causal relationships between specific pollutants and environmental change difficult to establish. Substantiating such relationships is further complicated by the complex network of positive and negative feedbacks that occur among most parts of the crustal-ocean-atmosphere fectory.
