A survey is presented of developments by various U.S. manufacturers in gel coats, in-mould films and primers for composite materials which improve the composite fabricator s work environment and clean up community air quality, without compromising product performance. The coatings developed comply with the Environmental Protection Agency s standards on Maximum Achievable Control Technology for regulation of emission of hazardous air pollutants(HAPs). 

The application of hydrogen peroxide for environmental clean-up has a pivotal role to play within the chemical industry. Indeed, such treatments have breathed new life into industries which have been classed as damaging to the environment, thus extending their lifetime. Whilst it will always be desirable to aim for zero effluent processes, it is only realistic to have in the armoury the ability to treat waste products end of pipe . Such end of pipe applications for peroxy-gens will enable more economic routes to industrially important products to be developed. 

There has long been a question of whether bioremediation can lower PAH levels enough to protect human health and the environment (Allard Neilson, 1997). Monitoring the decrease from the levels of PAHs initially present in a polluted site does not confirm the actual extent of detoxification because some PAH metabolites themselves are toxic (Renoux et al., 1999 Kazunga et al., 2001). Because residual PAHs and their metabolites may still be hazardous, incomplete bioremediation of contaminated soils in the past has raised some doubts about the usefulness of this technology for meeting environmental clean-up standards (Breedveld Karlsen, 2000 Kazunga Aitken, 2000 Andersson et al., 2003). 

The two main federal agencies involved in the protection of human health and the environment are the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). EPA s principal concern is the protection of the environment, in most cases, the area outside of an industrial faciUty. There are 10 regional offices that carry out the regulatory functions of the agency (Table 1). Primary laws covered by EPA are the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA), the Clean Water Act (CWA), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and LiabiUty Act (CERCLA), Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), and Eederal Insecticide, Eungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).

Created the Environment Agency (EAJ and the SEA for Scotland. Contains detailed provisions for dealing with a range of environmental issues including air quality contaminated land reinforcing the polluter pays principle water quality, with the EA empowered to require action to prevent water pollution and to require polluters to clean up after any pollution episode. 

We could argue that protecting the environment must take priority over financial savings. After all, investments into clean technologies, such as a gas-fired plant, have global environmental implications, so why shouldn t a utility owner/operator take a little less profit ...
