Environment, chemistry depletion

This is probably the key heterogeneous reaction for Antarctic stratospheric ozone depletion, and serves as a useful focus for the discussion of the theoretical challenges that must be addressed in dealing with fairly complex chemistry in a complex environment, challenges enlivened — as will be seen below — by the evident chemical involvement of the ice surface environment.

Fortunately many people are now aware of issues such as pollution from car exhaust and ozone depletion. At the same time, Canadian chemical and related industries employ about 250 000 people and generate tens of billions of dollars annually. These industries make the products that entertain, feed, clothe, and keep Canadians comfortable. When discussing atmospheric chemistry and pollution, we must consider two important influences the economy and the environment. 

Hofmann (1988) showed that crust formation by extraction of partial melt from the mantle could well explain much of the trace-element chemistry of crust-mantle differentiation. However, a few elements, notably niobium, tantalum, and lead, do not fit into the simple pattern of enrichment and depletion due to simple partial melting (Hofmann et al., 1986).
