Ensure a Clear Mission or Vision Statement

A basic tenet of current organizational theory emphasizes the importance of establishing a clear statement of an organization s mission or vision in order to establish a common purpose, which is the key element in a group becoming a team. The concept is reflected in the statement Start with the end in mind. In many cases an organization already has formulated a safety mission or vision, or a mission statement in which safety is a primary element. 

The basic purpose at this stage is to ensure that a safety design team has a clear mission. If an organization does not have a mission statement, the design team should work with upper management to create one. Once a working mission statement has been drafted, it needs to be reviewed by all employees in order to get their input and suggestions for its further enhancement.
