But the course per se was not the only focus of the trip. Once the formal course concluded, most of the group took a long trip by rail and bus to a remote and impoverished part of eastern India, in and around Paralakhemundi, at the Orissa-Andhra Pradesh border, an area normally off-limits to visitors and accessible only by government permit. The focus of the experience was on tribal living and rural needs. The idea was to spend time with the local residents, learn about their problems and needs, and see what the students could do to improve the lives of the people by using their engineering skills.
