Engineering organizations, involvement

Biotechnology products are pharmaceutical products prepared by industrial processes that involve the use of biological systems such as fermentation or tissue culture. For some industries, these processes involve the use of genetically engineered organisms. The preparation of products generally involves recombinant DNA, monoclonal antibody/hybridoma, continuous cell lines, and cellular therapy technology. 

By our "national technical enterprise," I refer to those activities in the United States included in the roughly 50 billion to be spent in 1979, supporting the efforts of approximately 600,000 scientists and engineers. I have been asked to present an overall picture of this vast system of government, university, and industrial R D. This obviously cannot be done in a reasonable time by a straightforward review of the technical progress and plans of all the organizations involved. 

An interesting application of biocompatible and biodegradable polymers is in the field of tissue engineering, which involves the creation of natural tissue with the ability to restore missing organ function. 

Because both chemists and chemical engineers are involved in formulating a practical strategy for accomplishing an organic synthesis, it is important to appreciate the roles of each. We do so by considering a simple reaction such as the chlorination of methane to methyl chloride ...
