Often the van der Waals attraction is balanced by electric double-layer repulsion. An important example occurs in the flocculation of aqueous colloids. A suspension of charged particles experiences both the double-layer repulsion and dispersion attraction, and the balance between these determines the ease and hence the rate with which particles aggregate. Verwey and Overbeek [44, 45] considered the case of two colloidal spheres and calculated the net potential energy versus distance curves of the type illustrated in Fig. VI-5 for the case of 0 = 25.6 mV (i.e., 0 = k.T/e at 25°C). At low ionic strength, as measured by K (see Section V-2), the double-layer repulsion is overwhelming except at very small separations, but as k is increased, a net attraction at all distances... [Pg.240]

Cadmium Sulfide Photoconductor. CdS photoconductive films are prepared by both evaporation of bulk CdS and settHng of fine CdS powder from aqueous or organic suspension foUowed by sintering (60,61). The evaporated CdS is deposited to a thickness from 100 to 600 nm on ceramic substates. The evaporated films are polycrystaUine and are heated to 250°C in oxygen at low pressure to increase photosensitivity. Copper or silver may be diffused into the films to lower the resistivity and reduce contact rectification and noise. The copper acceptor energy level is within 0.1 eV of the valence band edge. Sulfide vacancies produce donor levels and cadmium vacancies produce deep acceptor levels. [Pg.431]

The attenuation of ultrasound (acoustic spectroscopy) or high frequency electrical current (dielectric spectroscopy) as it passes through a suspension is different for weU-dispersed individual particles than for floes of those particles because the floes adsorb energy by breakup and reformation as pressure or electrical waves josde them. The degree of attenuation varies with frequency in a manner related to floe breakup and reformation rate constants, which depend on the strength of the interparticle attraction, size, and density (inertia) of the particles, and viscosity of the Hquid. [Pg.549]

The most common thickener is the circular basin type shown in Figure 7. After treatment with flocculant, the feed stream enters the central feed well which dissipates the stream s kinetic energy and disperses it gendy into the thickener. The feed finds its height in the basin where its density matches the density of the inside suspension and spreads out at that level. SoHds concentration increases downward in an operating thickener giving stabiHty to the process. [Pg.322]

Reverse Osmosis. In reverse osmosis (qv), a solution or suspension flows under pressure through a membrane the product is withdrawn on the other side. This process can treat dissolved soHds concentrations ranging from 1 mg/L to 35 g/L (14). The principal constraint is the requirement that the waste material be relatively nonfouling. Recent advances have been mosdy in membrane development, and pilot studies are required (15). Energy costs can be significant, and it is frequently necessary to pretreat influent in order to minimize fouhng. Reverse osmosis can deal with particles < 1 to 600 nm in size. [Pg.294]

Freeze Crystallization. Freezing may be used to form pure ice crystals, which are then removed from the slurry by screens sized to pass the fine sohds but to catch the crystals and leave behind a more concentrated slurry. The process has been considered mostly for solutions, not suspensions. However, freeze crystallization has been tested for concentrating orange juice where sohds are present (see Fruit juices). Commercial apphcations include fmit juices, coffee, beer, wine (qv), and vinegar (qv). A test on milk was begun in 1989 (123). Freeze crystallization has concentrated pulp and paper black hquor from 6% to 30% dissolved sohds and showed energy savings of over 75% compared with multiple-effect evaporation. Only 35—46 kJ/kg (15—20 Btu/lb) of water removed was consumed in the process (124). [Pg.25]
