Endogenous Adult Stem Cells as a Therapeutic Strategy

Endogenous Adult Stem Cells as a Therapeutic Strategy [Pg.163]

Recent evidence confirms the widespread occurrence of neural stem cells and the production of new neurons in many parts of adult brain. Although the regeneration of new neurons has been observed only at a very low frequency and can only replace a small fraction of neurons (Fallon et al., 2000 Magavi et al., 2000), these findings encourage work toward [Pg.163]

Finally, mnch of the biology of regeneration of nervons system tissue has yet to be discovered. Many of the factors that contribute to regeneration and/or that prevent it remain unknown. NSCs may provide as yet nnidentified factors to host tissue, enabling or enhancing regeneration of damaged tissue. [Pg.164]
