Vinyl emulsion polymerization

In the emulsion-polymerization of methyl methacrylate by carbonyl initiators, intramicellar processes have been found to reduce the conversion rate. On the other hand, the application of weak magnetic fields has been found to increase the conversion of emulsion-polymerized vinyl monomers using triplet ketone sensitizers. Here external magnetic fields will decrease the efficiency of triplet-to-singlet radical-pair intersystem crossing within the micelles and thus increase the function of radical pairs that escape without terminating the polymer chains. [Pg.476]

The polymer can be made by suspension, emulsion, solution, or bulk polymerization methods. Most of the PVC used in calendering, extrusion, and molding is prepared by suspension polymerization. Emulsion polymerized vinyl resins are used in plastisols and organisols. ° Only a small amount of commercial PVC is prepared by solution polymerization. The microstructure of PVC is mostly atactic, but a sufficient quantity of syndio-tactic portions of the chain allow for a low fraction of crystallinity (about 5 percent). The polymers are essentially linear, but a low number of short-chain branches may exist. The monomers are predominantly arranged head to tail along the backbone of the chain. Due to the presence of the chlorine group, PVC polymers are more polar than polyethylene. The molecular weights of commercial polymers are M = 100,000 to 200,000 ... [Pg.107]

Spray drier n. A cylindrical or conical-bot-tomed chamber through which hot air rises and into which a resin emulsion is sprayed in small droplets. The solvent evaporates from the droplets as they fall and the dried-resin powder is removed from the chamber bottom by scraping or air blasting. Spray drying has been employed for emulsion-polymerized vinyl resin, and for amino and phenolic resins. [Pg.916]
