Employment Opportunities in Government

Government employment for engineers is available in two ways you can join the military or you can work as a civilian employee. Many believe that the superior alternative is to join one of the uniformed services such as the U.S. Navy s Civil Engineer Corps or the Army Corps of Engineers. 

Large numbers of civilian engineers are employed by agencies of federal, state, and local governments. The greatest opportunities for work in government exist for civil engineers. 

At the state level, engineers are employed in large numbers by state highway agencies and may be found in agencies concerned with port operation, water resources management, and protection of the environment. 

At the local level, engineers serve as directors of public works, manage water treatment plants, and oversee pollution control programs. 

Engineering positions in government may provide satisfying and interesting work, with the added benefits of secure employment with liberal holidays and vacations and attractive programs of health and retirement.
