Emotional well-being attitude

This positivist attitude is well-established in the biomedical world, and, to be sure, it was hard-won and hardly to be disparaged. However, at the same time, the price for objectifying disease has diluted, if not too often replaced medicine s ancient calling of care. I mean by care, attention to each facet of the individual, namely, treating the patient as a person, as a whole. A medicine that fails to address those elements of personhood that have no scientific basis - the social, the emotional, the moral - is ultimately fractional and therefore incomplete. Only by the physician committing to comprehensive care can the multifarious elements of being ill be addressed effectively. There is no one else to assume that responsibility, and we must invoke the ethics of responsibility to re-define the entire enterprise.5... 

We must be careful not to attribute cause and effect to the above statements, because, although there is a connection, they may only mean that it s only healthy people who think of themselves that way (see Example 1.3.2). Nonetheless, engineering solutions involving people or higher animals need to include the attitudes and emotional needs of their subjects as well as their physical needs. 

Under discussion are those phenomena where - on the level of the single person - a complex mixture of fluctuating rational considerations, professional activities and emotional preferences and motivations finally merge into one of relatively few well demarcated resultant attitudes. These attitudes may be in the field (later denoted as dimension ) of religion, politics, education, habitation, occupation, economic standard, consumer habits, family, sport, etc. A single "attitude may, for instance, find an expression in the form of a religious denomination, in a vote for a certain political party or in membership of a certain income class.
