Emergency medical services are a common site in retirement communities

The myriad of social, cultural, educational, and recreational activities provided in the large scale retirement communities are part of the social engineering that keeps the residents mentally active and provides them with purpose and meaning and means for social interaction and expression that might not be available to elderly living in other situations in which a lifestyle, not just a living space, is being provided. 

The support system provided within large scale, planned retirement communities lessens the need for governmentally-based and faith-based social service programs. In those cases where such programs are needed, this pattern of elderly settlement simplifies the delivery of social, cultural, educational, religious, health-related, and ethnic services to this population.
