All matter is composed of elements, of which there are 118 different [Pg.96]

The correct amounts of certain elements are crucial to the proper growth and function of the body. Low levels of iron can lead to anemia, while lack of iodine can cause hypothyroidism and goiter. Some elements known as microminerals, such as chromium, cobalt, and selenium, are needed in our bodies in very small amounts. Laboratory tests are used to confirm that these elements are within normal ranges in our bodies. [Pg.96]

Given the name of an element, write its correct symbol from the symbol, write the correct name. [Pg.96]

Elements are pure substances from which all other things are built. Elements cannot be broken down into simpler substances. Over the centuries, elements have been named for planets, mythological figures, colors, minerals, geographic locations, and famous people. Some sources of names of elements are listed in Table 4.1.
