Elemental carbon system

As previously stated, uranium carbides are used as nuclear fuel (145). Two of the typical reactors fueled by uranium and mixed metal carbides are thermionic, which are continually being developed for space power and propulsion systems, and high temperature gas-cooled reactors (83,146,147). In order to be used as nuclear fuel, carbide microspheres are required. These microspheres have been fabricated by a carbothermic reduction of UO and elemental carbon to form UC (148,149). In addition to these uses, the carbides are also precursors for uranium nitride based fuels. [Pg.325]

What I hope to have added to the discussion has been a philosophical reflection on the nature of the concept of element and in particular an emphasis on elements in the sense of basic substances rather than just simple substances. The view of elements as basic substances, is one with a long history. The term is due to Fritz Paneth, the prominent twentieth century radio-chemist. This sense of the term element refers to the underlying reality that supports element-hood or is prior to the more familiar sense of an element as a simple substance. Elements as basic substances are said to have no properties as such although they act as the bearers of properties. I suppose one can think of it as a substratum for the elements. Moreover, as Paneth and before him Mendeleev among others stressed, it is elements as basic substances rather than as simple substances that are summarized by the periodic table of the elements. This notion can easily be appreciated when it is realized that carbon, for example, occurs in three main allotropes of diamond, graphite and buckminsterfullenes. But the element carbon, which takes its place in the periodic system, is none of these three simple substances but the more abstract concept of carbon as a basic substance. [Pg.10]

Another, simple form of elemental carbon would be chains formed from carbon atoms. As a prototype model a single>stranded chain is most suitable. If branching were to be considered, all intermediate forms up to and including the diamond and graphite like clusters would be included. For non branched chains, the two variants to choose from are a system of alternating singly and triply bonded carbon atoms (poly-ynes), and a system with all double bonds (cumulenes). Cumulene structures are assumed to be the preferred ones for odd membered chains, whereas the even ones may have some poly-yne character. Recent studies on linear Cg show that a cumulene-like structure is preferred, both at the SCF level and when correlation is accounted for(50). [Pg.43]

The activity of elemental carbon as a metal-free catalyst is well established for a couple of reactions, however, most literature still deals with the support properties of this material. The discovery of nanostructured carbons in most cases led to an increased performance for the abovementioned reasons, thus these systems attracted remarkable research interest within the last years. The most prominent reaction is the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of ethylbenzene and other hydrocarbons in the gas phase, which will be introduced in a separate chapter. The conversion of alcohols as well as the catalytic properties of graphene oxide for liquid phase selective oxidations will also be discussed in more detail. The third section reviews individually reported catalytic effects of nanocarbons in organic reactions, as well as selected inorganic reactions. [Pg.401]

The reflectance system also provides a test of the effectiveness of purging prior to the 600°C/He volatilization of organic carbon. Residual O2 at 600°C will oxidize elemental carbon and produce an increase in the reflectance of the filter. In the e-vent that such an increase is observed, the sample would be rerun, and if this behaviour persists, the system would be checked for leaks or other malfunctions. Thus, the reflectance system plays an important quality assurance role in the analysis. [Pg.226]

By comparing the actual composition of sea water (sediments + sea -f- air) with a model in which the pertinent components (minerals, volatiles) with which water has come into contact are allowed to reach true equilibrium, Sillen in 1959 epitomized the application of equilibrium models for portraying the prominent features of the chemical composition of this system. His analysis, for example, has indicated that contrary to the traditional view, the pH of the ocean is not buffered primarily by the carbonate system his results suggest that heterogeneous-equilibria of silicate minerals comprise the principal pH buffer systems in oceanic waters. This approach and its expansion have provided a more quantitative basis for Forchbammer s suggestion of 100 years ago that the quantity of the different elements in sea water is not proportional to the quantity of elements which river water pours into the sea but is inversely proportional to the facility with which the elements in sea water are made insoluble by general chemical actions in the sea. [Pg.5]
